Tirana to Sarandë: the ultimate road trip

Albania's roads are as varied as the country itself — from the smooth motorways linking Tirana to Durrës, to the winding mountain passes above the Llogara tunnel. Knowing what to expect before you get behind the wheel makes the difference between a stress-free trip and an unexpected detour.

The national speed limit is 110 km/h on motorways, 80 km/h on secondary roads and 50 km/h inside built-up areas. Albania drives on the right. Seatbelts are compulsory for all passengers and mobile phones must be hands-free.

Fuel stations are plentiful along the main corridors but can be sparse in the mountains — top up before heading into the highlands. Most stations accept cash; card acceptance is growing but not yet universal.

For mountain routes to Theth, Valbona or the Llogara pass, a higher-clearance vehicle is advisable, especially outside the summer months. Our SUV and 4×4 fleet is chosen specifically for these roads.
